The Woodhull Platform

"Good care is taken that each state shall have its prisons . . . and other asylums; but not one building is erected nor one law enforced that would teach the people how not to contribute to these over-crowded receptacles of human misery . . . . All of our politicians are ready to deal with the effects, but not one of them is brave enough to penetrate the substratum of society and deal with the cause."

The solutions to our problems aren't easy, and there are many more things that can be done than what is mentioned in this platform. However, the reforms suggested by Victoria Woodhull are a start:

"A new educational system in which all children born shall have the same advantage of physical, industrial, mental and moral culture, and thus be equally prepared at maturity to enter upon active, responsible and useful lives. . . . In so doing, it strikes a fatal blow at . . . the most demoralizing of all monopolies. . . educational superiority." Our public education system leaves our children ill-equipped to cope with modern work-life and doesn't help those with social problems at home or in school. Our educational system needs a complete overhaul to help every child reach his or her full potential. We should have free college education for those who could otherwise not afford to go. Education is our nation's greatest defense against poverty and crime.

"It is the duty of the Government to become the guardian and protector of all children whose interests are not maintained and protected by their parents. . . . The best interests of children, at whatever cost, is the proper motto."We need to address the issue of rape in this country. According to the Dept. of Justice, half the females raped during 1992 were under 18. According to the 1995 Information Please Women's Sourcebook, 30% of female rape victims were under the age of 11. It's not our women who are being raped in epidemic proportions, it's our children! The majority are raped by family members or friends. That's unconscionable. Thirteen percent of adolescent boys have been physically or sexually assaulted, and we wonder why some boys become violent. Children are the weakest members of our society. We can't improve this country without addressing the problems of our weakest and most vulnerable group. We need to address child care and health insurance.

"A new political system in which ALL persons of adult age will participate," if they so desire. We need the input of everyone if we are to solve society's problems.

"A reform in representation by which all legislative bodies and the Presidential Electoral College shall be elected that minorities, as well as majorities shall have direct representation." Or even the abolishment of the Electoral College as an effete, elite body, no longer necessary in the function of good government.

"A complete reform in Executive and Departmental conduct, by which the President and the Secretaries of the United States, and the Governors and State officers, shall be forced to recognize that they are the servants of the people, appointed to attend to the business of the people, and not for the purpose of perpetuating their official positions, or of securing the plunder of public trusts for the enrichment of their political adherents and supporters."
